History
STEPS Forward was formed in 2001 when a small group of parents gathered to consider the question “what can I do to make sure that my son or daughter with a developmental disability will lead a full rewarding life in his or her community?” This fundamental issue is the driving force behind the work of STEPS Forward.
This BC Initiative for Inclusive Post-Secondary Education is a family-driven organization founded to ensure that people with developmental disabilities are included as students in the academic and social life of colleges and universities of British Columbia.
The last 10 years have been a very exciting time. We have grown from supporting one student at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design to supporting students across British Columbia at the University of British Columbia at Point Grey and in the Okanagan, at the University of Victoria, Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, and Simon Fraser University. We are currently in discussions with other local colleges and universities.
